Some horrible form of a cold is going around our house right now and Maryn is the latest victim. The poor little girl's nose has turned into a faucet and she has coughing fits from all the crud stuck in her lungs. Luckily we already had an appointment scheduled this morning for her 15 month appointment so we were able to get right in. The poor baby's cold has turned into an ear infection. It is the first ear infection ever for our family so we're in unchartered waters. So far she's sleeping great... slept through the night last night and didn't get up until 7:40 this morning. And right now she is in the middle of a 2+ hour nap. Hopefully that will help her feel better. She's all loaded up on meds right now so I'm sure that wiped her out. I'm not sure what to expect or how she's going to act... she's not even really pulling at her ears and that's the main thing I was looking for. Luckily I think we caught it in the early stages before it got too bad.
As for other info from her appointment, I was right about her weight. She is still really little. I was hoping for above 20 lbs and I barely got it. When they set her on the scale it teetered around the 19 lbs around until finally settling in at 20 lbs 0 oz. I'll take it. At least we hit 20 lbs finally. Oh and she grew almost an inch (30 3/4 inches long) in the past 3 months. The doctor and I had a long talk about her size and the doctor isn't the least bit concerned. She said that Maryn continues to grow (even if it is only 1 lb/1 inch in 3 months) and is consistently in the same low percentage bracket (10-15 percentile). She said she would only be concerned if Maryn dropped off suddenly or didn't gain at all, neither of which has happened. Basically she just thinks that Maryn is going to be a littler person. This is such a switch for us as Makenna always gained at least 3 lbs at every appointment and was off the charts for percentages! I guess we are lucky to have one child at each end of the spectrum :)
Other things we discussed at her appointment - Maryn had a bad reaction to her first flu shot (red rash all over her body) so they didn't allow her to get the second dosage. Typically this means that a child is allergic to eggs if they react this way, but Maryn has never reacted to any other food (and I cook with eggs). So we decided we would just play it by ear next year and decide then if we would try another flu shot or not. Also, I had Dr. Sterling check out the concerning area in Maryn's mouth that was left behind after her Epstein Pearls faded away. It looks almost as if a tooth is going to break through way up high on her gum. The doctor assured me this is not the case - that it's not a tooth or bone up there. She believes it's just scar tissue left behind from her Epstein Pearls.
So with all that said, we have a lot to be thankful for. Despite a little virus and a few minor issues, Maryn is a perfectly healthy little girl! Thank God!

Mullet Baby!
Maybe it's not the nicest nickname, but we have endearingly started calling Maryn our mullet baby! Her hair is growing in the exact same pattern that Makenna's did at this age... there is a lot of longer hair in the back and it's staying short on top! Perfect for those that love a mullet! Ahhhh! Too bad we aren't living in the 70's anymore! I can't bring myself to cut the back though... we'll just have to wait it out and go through the mullet baby stage! Oh well. Mullet and all, she's still the cutest baby around :)

Maryn's 1st Time Playing In The Snow
I finally found snowpants in Maryn's size (hard to come by that small) and some boots that were small enough (granted they are still a size too big and not meant to be actual "snow" boots but we're making the best of it!). So after this last big storm Josh took both of the girls out in the snow! Maryn loved every second of it, even the few times she face planted in a pile of snow! She did not want to come in house! When Josh finally brought her inside she started stomping her feet and throwing a fit because she wanted to go back outside :) I guess she's just like her big sister... I'm sure they'll build an igloo together and live out there when they're older :)

Christmas Cookies & More
I feel a little behind on my blogging. I guess you could say the holidays are catching up with me. There's not enough time in the day!
Makenna continues learning at an amazing pace. Within the last few weeks we have noticed her sounding out letters and words. For example, the other night she was brushing her teeth and she said "That's my tongue mommy. T-t-t-t-tongue. That's a "T"!" I could hardly believe it. So we've continued to quiz her and she seems to know how to sound out a good portion of her alphabet. She's very curious about words and when she says things every once in awhile she will say "That starts with ___" I am amazed by her ability to pick this stuff up. She is recognizing more and more words and is able to spell more words.
A cute story... (Just so you know for later in this story, Mousy Mousy is a fun game we play with the girls that my mom taught us.) Makenna was in a rotten mood one morning and nothing seemed to be going her way. She wanted to do something (for the life of me I can't remember what right now) that particular morning and we were running behind and wouldn't have time that day. She was so upset and this just added to her bad mood. I was in my bathroom getting ready and she was pacing outside the door moping and whining. Finally she jumps in our bed, lays down and yells to me "Mommy, you come do Mousy Mousy to me to cheer me up!" And it worked! I guess I'll have to try Mousy Mousy more often! And of course Maryn had to get in bed and join in the Mousy Mousy fun as well :)
The girls are enjoying all the fun of this season. Makenna really likes to wrap presents and bake cookies. We've already made 6 dozen cookies and are planning for 3 dozen more in the next day or so and a few pans of bars! Lots of baking! Luckily I have plans to give most of the food away :) She is enjoying being mommy's helper and also our taste-tester!

Maryn has a newfound interest in the telephone. I believe the main reason this even started is because every time I held the phone up to her ear it was Daddy on the phone. Well as we all know, she has a special bond with Daddy and thus thought that every time she picked up a phone she would hear his voice. Now she wants to get her hands on every telephone she can! I can't talk on the phone without her trying to grab it away from me! She will hold the phone up to her face and jabber into it. And she is even able to have a conversation appropriately on the phone with someone now... meaning that she will say "hi", wait for them to ask a question and then answer with a "yea" or "no". She's pretty adorable :)

Putting Up The Tree
I don't know why I titled this entry "Putting Up The Tree" because I don't have a single picture of our tree. The girls were fascinated with the huge box the tree comes in so I had to take pictures of them playing in it :) It's amazing what simple things can entertain kids for hours!
Maryn - 15 Months Old
All About Maryn Leigh at 15 months old....
Nicknames: MarBear, Moosa, Moosa Roo
Weight & Height: Still a little peanut... we will find out numbers next week at her check-up. I'm going to be happy if she's above 20 pounds.
Hair: Still light brown but she is finally starting to get a little more, especially in the back. The fuzziness seems to go away as she gets more hair. Just in the last few weeks we have been able to put barrettes and pigtails in her hair!
Favorite foods: I think at this point in time it would be easier for me to list the foods that she doesn't eat versus the ones that she does. She's not very picky. But with that said, she doesn't eat a large quantity of food. Some of her favorites include grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, any type of melon, chopped up grapes, pizza, any type of Italian food (spaghetti, lasagna, etc), goldfish crackers, and when she gets bites of cereal out of Mommy and Daddy's cereal bowl in the morning (especially if it's Daddy's Cinnamon Toast Crunch!). She has also developed a sweet tooth and always wants a bite if she sees us eating something sweet :)
Favorite Drink: Whole milk, water and water with an ounce of apple juice in it.
Favorite toys: Puzzles, books, bead maze, blocks, toy magnets, ball popper toy, and any ball! In the past few months she has really started playing well with others. Her and Makenna have a lot of fun together. For example, if we're playing blocks Maryn will find all the single blocks and bring them to Makenna to build something. She's always so proud of herself and will clap when she's done :) Maryn also amazes me by the fact that she does very well at independent play for her age. She is very content to sit in a corner or in the playroom with her toys and play on her own for a while.
Favorite books: Mr Brown Can Moo, Can You?, Peekaboo Zoo and Where Is Baby's Belly Button?. Basically anything with lift-the-flap will make her happy though. She can sit with a pile of books and read contently for probably 20 - 30 minutes. She loves it! My favorite book to read to her is Mr. Brown because she makes all the adorable noises that are in the book - "Dopp Dopp Dopp!"
Favorite Game: Ring Around The Rosie or wrestling and running with Daddy and Kenna

Latest Accomplishment: Since the last time I did this, her biggest accomplishment is definitely walking! She took her first steps at 11 months, started putting a few steps together on a regular basis at 13 months and then was full-fledged walking by 14 months. It is so fun to have a little wobbly toddler walking around our house (minus all the bumps and bruises).
Likes: screaming contests with her big sister, music (especially our Strawberry Shortcake CD!), dancing with Daddy, baths, when mommy talks in her silly voice, phones, having Poppy tickle her neck, trying to climb out of her highchair, when Mommy and Daddy try to reprimand her (she'll just look at us and laugh)
Dislikes: getting her diaper changed, wearing her coat, getting her mouth and hands wiped off after meals, being thirsty, late afternoon (she is always fussy at this time and wants to be held constantly)
What gets said about Maryn most often: that she looks just like Katie as a baby (and I have the pictures to prove it!)
Best known for: her loud-pitched squeals, being a Daddy's girl
Health: Maryn has had a few colds so far this winter and she broke out in a very itchy rash after her flu shot (we're still not sure if it was related or not).
How she's like Daddy: She is extremely loud just like her Daddy! And she has a temper just like Josh - when she doesn't get her way she gets very mad. Oh yeah and she's super opinionated already at this sweet tender age of 15 months, but I guess that's just like Daddy AND Mommy :)
How she's like Mommy: Maryn continues to have mommy's "practicing" gene.... she will sit at a puzzle and work on the same piece over and over again until she has it down just perfect. As I mentioned earlier, she also looks just like Mommy as a baby.
Interesting Tidbits: Maryn is a monkey! She's climbs everything! Give her 10 seconds alone in a room and she will find something to climb! Currently she's still really small so she can't get up too high yet, but I'm worried for the day when she's longer and can propel her body up onto more dangerously high objects. Maryn also has become a little social butterfly! This is an interesting turn of events since she was our shy, bashful child for the first year of her life. Now she will reach out her arms to be held by just about anyone... even if she doesn't know them! At playgroup, she takes her time going around to each mom in the group and making sure that they all hold her at least once each playgroup :) She will also walk up to just about anyone and wave and say "hi" and if she doesn't get a response she will take another step closer and try again... kind of sounds like she's following in the social footsteps of her big sister!

Prepping For Christmas
I truly do love Christmas. I love this time of year. I love the decorations. I love the white snow on the ground. I love seeing my kids so excited about everything! I love baking all the goodies (and eating them!). I love buying gifts and giving to others. I love wrapping presents. I love all the cute holiday cartoons on TV. I love the holiday music and those classic Christmas movies we have to watch every year (Christmas Vacation!!!). I love getting Christmas cards in the mail and seeing how all my friends and family have changed throughout the year. I love getting to spend time with family. But most importantly, I love the true meaning of Christmas. It has been a joy to teach Makenna about Jesus' birth and how that is so very important to us. And that the only reason we celebrate Christmas - the only reason for the lights, the tree, the presents, the goodies - is to celebrate His birth! It is exciting to watch Makenna take off with this idea since 3 year olds really love the idea of a birthday :) Despite all the stress and busy schedules, we are doing lots at our house to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas and I hope you are doing the same as well :)
Last weekend we were stranded in our house during the ice storm on Saturday so we took advantage and put up the Christmas tree. Makenna loved helping with the ornaments and it took all the patience she had to wait for me to string the lights up first! Josh even had some "Ho Ho Holiday Spirit" (this is our little saying at our house when somebody is not chipper around the holidays ;) and agreed to put up the outside decorations a few weeks ago! So now our house is all aglow with beautiful Christmas lights! Luckily Maryn walked right up to the tree, touched it, and then walked away. I was so relieved... I was sure she would be my child that would terrorize my tree! So far she has shown little to no interest.
Maryn is starting to communicate remarkably well with us. If you ask her a yes/no question, she will answer appropriately. For example, if she's whining and I can't figure out what she wants I can ask her "MarBear do you want some milk?" Shakes her head no and says "no". "MarBear would you like a snack?" Nods her head yes and says "yes". Her comprehension also seems to be increasing as well as we are noticing that she is understanding more and more of our conversations everyday.
One of Maryn's other cute new tricks is that she thinks it's fun to shut herself in the laundry room. Don't ask me how this got started, but she will just walk in there and shut the door and start laughing to herself! Then when somebody comes to get her out she will try to shut the door on you and laugh again. It's just a big game to her, but it's pretty darn adorable.
Makenna has finally hit that girly stage I've been waiting for... PRINCESSES! She is over the top about the princesses, specifically Cinderella. She can't get enough of them! She has actually only seen the Cinderella movie a few times, but we read the book all the time. So now we have taken to role-playing the Cinderella movie. She will pretend she is one of the evil stepsisters and rip my (pretend) dress to shreds. Then run off and cry like Cinderella would and I have to be the fairy godmother and go "Bibiddy Bobiddy Bo" and get her a new dress and coach. And then of course we dance like we're Cinderella and the prince and then she runs up the stairs and trips and falls and loses one of her glass slippers. It cracks me up every time. She really has this story down :)
Maryn's in a stage right now where it's more fun to take the toys out of the box/basket and just sit inside of it instead of actually playing with the toys.

For example, if she's whining and I can't figure out what she wants I can ask her "MarBear do you want some milk?" Shakes her head no and says "no". "MarBear would you like a snack?" Nods her head yes and says "yes". Her comprehension also seems to be increasing as well as we are noticing that she is understanding more and more of our conversations everyday.
One of Maryn's other cute new tricks is that she thinks it's fun to shut herself in the laundry room. Don't ask me how this got started, but she will just walk in there and shut the door and start laughing to herself! Then when somebody comes to get her out she will try to shut the door on you and laugh again. It's just a big game to her, but it's pretty darn adorable.
Makenna has finally hit that girly stage I've been waiting for... PRINCESSES! She is over the top about the princesses, specifically Cinderella. She can't get enough of them! She has actually only seen the Cinderella movie a few times, but we read the book all the time. So now we have taken to role-playing the Cinderella movie. She will pretend she is one of the evil stepsisters and rip my (pretend) dress to shreds. Then run off and cry like Cinderella would and I have to be the fairy godmother and go "Bibiddy Bobiddy Bo" and get her a new dress and coach. And then of course we dance like we're Cinderella and the prince and then she runs up the stairs and trips and falls and loses one of her glass slippers. It cracks me up every time. She really has this story down :)
Maryn's in a stage right now where it's more fun to take the toys out of the box/basket and just sit inside of it instead of actually playing with the toys.

Action shot of our girls fighting... yes, even at this young, tender age they fight. I told Josh that I feel like I'm moving to a new stage of motherhood because one day last week I felt like I spent my entire day playing referee! I am pretty sure that 90% of the fights are instigated by Maryn. She just walks in the room and demands whatever Makenna is playing with and will throw a fit if she doesn't get it. Here is a great example... notice Maryn trying to grab for the Cinderella doll in Makenna's hand.
