I'm way behind on all the cute stories so here it goes....
A few weekends ago we were staying in Cedar Falls for another triathlon. Some of my cousins happened to be visiting from Wisconsin so Makenna was able to play with their girls for awhile that evening. I was checking on the girls playing in the family room and as I leave I hear Bailey say "Makenna I like your mom. She's really cute." There's a long pause and then I hear Makenna very defensively say "Hey don't say that about my mom! She is NOT cute!" I had to quietly chuckle to myself as I walked up the stairs.
One afternoon the girls were nicely playing together when all of a sudden I noticed a noise coming from the kitchen. The pantry door was all the way open, so that's usually a sign that someone wants a snack and is scavenging. Well nothing quite prepared me for what I was about to see when I peaked around the door... Here sits Maryn chowing on a bag a pretzels and holding a bottle of Josh's beer!!! I should've been thinking faster and got a picture of it but I failed to act fast enough.
Both of the girls have triathlon t-shirts that they wear to triathlons. Maryn's says "Future Triathlete" and Makenna's says "My Daddy Trains Harder Than Your Daddy." Makenna absolutely loves her shirt, but she continues to think it says "My Daddy's Faster Than Your Daddy." We were packing up for a recent triathlon and she was asking what to put in her suitcase. I told her the triathlon t-shirt and she says "Oh the "my daddy's faster" shirt?" I said "Yep." She excitedly exclaims "That's right because my Daddy's faster than all the other daddies!!" She gets quiet like she's pondering something and says "But mommy, then why are some of the other daddies that are faster than my daddy!!??"
One morning a few weeks ago the girls and I were busily getting ready for swimming lessons in the morning. I had both girls in the bathroom brushing their teeth but Makenna finished first so I went with her in her room to help her pick out some clothes. I came back in the bathroom to find Maryn hunched over the open toilet, rinsing her toothbrush out in the toilet bowl!!! And she put it back in her mouth before I had a chance to stop her!!! AHHHHHH! Yuck! We bought a new toothbrush that very afternoon!
Every time we go to the gym we drive by a specific car dealership that has a VW bug painted as a bumblebee. Makenna has been in love with this car for weeks and has it all set in her head that she is getting this car when she is old enough to drive (she even had a conversation with Daddy asking him if he would buy it for her). Well surprisingly enough, the "bee" car was gone one day. Makenna was devastated to say the least. I haven't heard much about the "bee" car for awhile now but earlier this week as we were randomly driving to the grocery store (not even past the car dealership) she brings up that she is sad about the "bee" car being gone. She's talking to me all about it from the backseat and all of a sudden she gets choked up and starts to cry a little bit. I asked her what was wrong and she told me "Mommy I don't want to drive a minivan when I get older." I laughed out loud. I couldn't help myself. I told her not to worry and that no teenager wants to drive a minivan and that Mommy and Daddy would buy her a different cool car when she turns 16. That seemed to suffice for now.
Funny things they say...
I think Josh and I use the phrase "Imagine that" quite a bit, but Makenna has gotten it a little confused in her head... she's been saying "How's that magine?" for a few weeks now :) And she says it with so much confidence that you just can't help but smile :)
To follow in her big sister's footsteps Maryn has decided to start calling me Katie (or Kay-Eee in her language). Makenna called Josh "Josh" for probably a good year of her life. Maryn doesn't use it all the time, just when she really wants my attention. I try not to encourage her but it's so cute to hear her little voice yelling "Kay-Eee" from her bed when she wants me to get her up, or "Kay-Eee" when she wants me to help her down the stairs.
Also, when Maryn laughs she actually says "Te He He He" as she's laughing. We need to get it on video because it's the cutest thing ever. Te He He He!!!

Happy 4th Bday Makenna!
Yesterday was Makenna's 4th birthday! The girls and I had fun at the splashpad in the morning, but the highlight of the day was definitely Chuck E Cheese for dinner! Makenna has been talking about it for weeks and the girls were chanting "Chuck E Cheese" the entire car ride to the restaurant! The funny thing is Maryn had no clue what was going on because she was only a baby the last time we were there. Makenna kept telling us "Maryn doesn't remember Chuck E Cheese so I'm going to have to show her around!" What a good big sister!

Makenna just had to have her goggles! We were there on Tuesday and another little girl had on goggles and she was crushed that we didn't have hers with us. She definitely remembered this time!

Maryn on the Bob the Builder ride at Chuck E Cheese. She really wasn't that into Churck E Cheese and this was the only ride she liked. She seriously wouldn't get out of it. I stood there for probably over 20 minutes feeding it tokens. $5.00 worth of tokens down the drain on a Bob the Builder ride :)

Makenna immensely enjoying her trip to Chuck E Cheese. Makenna on the other hand probably played every game in the place and had a smile on her face the entire time!

Of course we couldn't have a birthday at our house without a little drama. Makenna asked for ice cream sundaes for her birthday treat, so I stuck a candle in her self-made sundae and we sang to her. She was so excited to dive into her ice cream that right after she blew out the candle she tried to pull it out by the wick. Needless to say there were lots of tears and she was holding on to this ice cube for a long time. She now has a blister on her finger and thumb.

I was tucking Makenna in bed last night and it was our typical bedtime routine. Right as I was leaving her room she said "Mommy, thanks for all my nice birthday presents!" What a sweetheart!

Makenna - 4 Years Old
Makenna Jo Budke - 4 Years Old
Nicknames: Kenna, Nenny, Nenners, Buddy, Peanut
Weight & Height: Her doctor's appointment is next week so we will know for sure then. She seems to be leveling off in height and filling out a little more :)
Hair: Still long blond wispy hair, usually messy and windblown from playing outside. The various haircuts she has given herself over the years are finally starting to grow out :)
Favorite foods: Makenna is on a huge kick where she likes to try new things and typically picks out one new item every trip to the grocery store. Last time she wanted me to get eggplant - anyone have any recipes?? She still likes brats, hamburgers, hamburger pizza, any and all fruit, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, healthy sandwiches and really almost anything. She's not a picky eater at all.
Favorite Drink: Mostly she just drinks skim milk, water and watered down apple juice. But it is summer time and she has been able to indulge in a juice box at various special occasions.
Favorite toys: Anything princess! On almost any given day you will find her dressed up in a princess dress with all the accessories prancing around our house.
Favorite stuffed animal: Duckie
Favorite Books: The Five Little Monkeys books
Bedtime: As typically happens at our house, bedtime is getting pushed back a little later due to summer. Hopefully she's in bed by 8:00 most nights but she doesn't typically fall asleep right away.
Wake-up time: She's on the summer sleep-in schedule :) Typically doesn't get up before 8:00 and somedays it's even 8:30 or 9:00!
Naps: Naps??? What are those???
Favorite person: Any little kid... The neighbors Aly, Faith, Summer and Ana. Her girl cousins Josie and Hannah. And her friends from preschool and church, Hanna and Zariya.
Latest Accomplishment: She started reading in March and has continued to progress in her reading. She amazes me every time! She is sounding out new words constantly and really enjoys reading. She also has learned to ride a bike (with training wheels) this summer and has done remarkably well with it. We've only had a few minor crashes and she caught herself every time!
Likes: playing outside with little kids (doesn't matter who - she'll make a new friend if she has to!)
Dislikes: that Mommy and Daddy don't let her roam the neighborhood like the rest of the kids, pickles
What gets said about Makenna most often: Recently I've been asked numerous times if she is going to kindergarten this fall. When I told them she was still only three they could hardly believe it. A few people even questioned me like I didn't know my own daughter's age!
Best known for: being friendly, her yellow duck, ability to make friends anytime/anywhere, her compassion
Fears: the window in her room and the noises that come from it at night, bad dreams
Favorite shows: Probably the new movie she got for her birthday... Barbie's Fairytopia
Health: We're still dealing with her sun allergy/sensitivity this summer but so far we've got it under control. We are also still in the process of trying to get some allergy testing done and that will give us some insight into her antibiotic allergy. She had strep throat for the first time this spring :( Her tonsils are so large (even when she's not sick) that the doctors are considering taking them out for preventive reasons. I didn't realize they did that. Other than what I would consider these minor issues, she is a very healthy kid!
How she's like Daddy: Very compassionate person who loves to help others.
How she's like Mommy: Very well behaved and eager to please. She wants to be a good girl and tries so hard to be one all the time. If she is acting up, all I typically have to do is give her a stern look and she immediately apologizes, feels bad, and sometimes even starts to cry.

Makenna's 4th Bday Party
Saturday was Makenna's 4th birthday party. This event has been highly anticipated ever since she turned 3 :) She has known for probably the last 9 months that this year's party theme was going to be Cinderella. She also has every birthday party theme until she is 16 planned out, but that's a different story for a different day :) Makenna had a blast at her birthday party and when I asked her what her favorite part was she said "playing with her friends" - referring to all of her cousins. She was in pure bliss running around with all of her cousins. Then as an afterthought she added "and eating cake!" Of course! She was also very particular about the menu and just had to have brats and hamburgers at her party! Daddy happily manned the grill!

Cornman Triathlon 2008
Josh participated in the Cornman triathlon in Gladbrook today. It was a repeat performance as he participated in this event last summer as well. This is a sprint distance triathlon and is well known for being one of the tougher courses in Iowa. There is one hill right after another and some how it always seems to be windy at this race. Despite having a bum foot and not being able to run the week leading up to this race, Josh did very well. He knocked 12 minutes off his time from last year! With that said, he didn't feel good about his performance and just didn't feel that he had any legs underneath him today. I think he's just tough on himself ;)
A huge crowd turned out to cheer Josh on and that made it all the more fun! Josh's parents, my parents, Luke and Meghan and their girls and of course me and the girls were all there cheering him on. I believe he had the loudest cheering section in the place, Makenna definitely leading the way! One of the sweetest moments came when Josh was leaving to go out on the run and Maryn started yelling at him "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" But her tone started to change as Daddy was running past her and away from her and all of a sudden she was sobbing and screaming "Daddy" because she wanted to go with him! All the people around us started to chuckle because it was a very sweet moment! To hear her little voice go from pure excitement to "Why is my Daddy leaving me?" in just a matter of seconds was rather sweet. Luckily Daddy's a fast runner so she didn't have to wait very long.

4th of July
We decided to stick around the house and have a laidback 4th of July at home. The girls typically are in bed two hours before fireworks even start so we didn't really even explore that option. Josh created some of our own family fun instead... grilled some awesome steaks, did some sparklers, had a campfire and roasted s'mores in the backyard! As you can see in the pictures below, fun was had by all! :)

Maryn was not happy about the location of the Dora 4-wheeler in the yard. It only moves forward when you push the button so she decided to get off the 4-wheeler and solve the problem herself.
Much happier about the direction she's heading now...

Playing Catch Up
Somehow I feel like time is just slipping away from me this summer. How can it almost by July already?! I feel like I'm behind on blogging on the girls so we'll see what stories come to mind...
Most recently we enjoyed a weekend in Des Moines. Josh participated in the Hy-Vee triathlon and the girls and I got to spend some quality time with Shelly's family. Fun was definitely had by all! I don't think the smile left Makenna's face the entire time she was there :) She was in her glory shadowing her older cousin Josie! When she woke up on Sunday morning she rolled over with a huge grin on her face and exclaimed "I get to play with Josie some more!" She bounded out of bed and ran to find Josie!
Josh had a great performance at the triathlon and really enjoyed himself. It was his best performance yet and he said it is the triathlon he has enjoyed the most so far. He is definitely improving as the summer goes on so it will be interesting to see how he does in the other four triathlons he has planned this summer (yes, he is an overachiever!).
Currently the girls are enjoying swimming lessons. Makenna is really improving on her swimming skills and Maryn has become a little water baby! Last summer Maryn was terrified of the water. Whether it was a pool or a sprinkler, she wouldn't go near it. Now I can't get her out of the water! She is doing great with all of her new water skills and really loves to blow bubbles in the water! The only bad part is that I usually have to deal with a tantrum every time I get her out of the water.
Makenna had her first accident on the her bike. Josh and I saw it coming and I guess you could say it was probably partly our fault because we both started yelling at her, thus distracting her and we probably made the situation worse. We were walking on our trail (she was obviously riding her bike) and we came to a little dip in the trail that was a curve. We were both yelling at her to make sure she would use her brakes and I think we just confused her. She took a tumble, but she is such a brave little girl. You could tell she was sucking it up... no tears, nothing. Her voice was trembling a little, but she just kept telling us that "I'm okay mommy, I'm really okay." I think she was just in a little shock from the fact that she fell. Luckily there were no major injuries, just a little ouchie on her ankle (which she didn't even notice until much later). She kept saying how glad she was that she had her helmet and knee pads and elbow pads on (Mom and Dad were glad too!). And the part that I'm so proud of... we gave her the option of riding her bike home or riding in the wagon with Maryn and without hesitation she chose to ride her bike! What a brave little girl!
Maryn decided to shock us all this weekend by starting to potty train. She came in to the bathroom with me once at Fleischmanns and she was trying to climb on the potty and then started pulling her pants down. Obviously she wanted to try so I sat her up on the potty. She started off by just tooting a little (which still impressed me because she knew to push) and then she peed in the potty!!! I think I was in shock! And the little girl continued all weekend long! I think she peed in the potty at least 10 times over the weekend! She has continued to enjoy pottying this week, but it's definitely fallen off some. I'm not so sure this is the real deal, but I'm willing to explore it with her. If she's interested, then I'm ready to go! Now my issue is going to be finding little enough underwear... anyone know where you can find size 18 month underwear?? Her butt is so tiny I'm thinking I'm going to have to look in the doll section.

You could tell she was sucking it up... no tears, nothing. Her voice was trembling a little, but she just kept telling us that "I'm okay mommy, I'm really okay." I think she was just in a little shock from the fact that she fell. Luckily there were no major injuries, just a little ouchie on her ankle (which she didn't even notice until much later). She kept saying how glad she was that she had her helmet and knee pads and elbow pads on (Mom and Dad were glad too!). And the part that I'm so proud of... we gave her the option of riding her bike home or riding in the wagon with Maryn and without hesitation she chose to ride her bike! What a brave little girl!
Maryn decided to shock us all this weekend by starting to potty train. She came in to the bathroom with me once at Fleischmanns and she was trying to climb on the potty and then started pulling her pants down. Obviously she wanted to try so I sat her up on the potty. She started off by just tooting a little (which still impressed me because she knew to push) and then she peed in the potty!!! I think I was in shock! And the little girl continued all weekend long! I think she peed in the potty at least 10 times over the weekend! She has continued to enjoy pottying this week, but it's definitely fallen off some. I'm not so sure this is the real deal, but I'm willing to explore it with her. If she's interested, then I'm ready to go! Now my issue is going to be finding little enough underwear... anyone know where you can find size 18 month underwear?? Her butt is so tiny I'm thinking I'm going to have to look in the doll section.
